Bayberry Candles

For candles, we recommend using a 2:2 ratio of beeswax and bayberry. They will spread more easily, last longer and be lighter in color. Combine the berries with 2 inches of water in a saucepan. Let the water boil for about half an hour before allowing it to simmer.

Two to three layers can be placed on top of a bowl with cheesecloth. Then, filter the berries. Let the liquid cool for several hours before it can harden. The liquid will eventually separate and become solid wax. Now weigh all the beeswax. Combine the waxes in an container. You will need a few inches of wick. You should make the wick twice as long as the candle.

Use a skewer or a dip to secure the wax. It can be dangerous to work with hot wax. When laying wax, protect your hands. To dip candles, you can also use newspaper or kraft paper. As the wax cools, you will notice wax begin to drip. After the candles have cooled completely, it is possible to remove the wax.
