What is Ozokerite Wax?

 It's called "fossil wax" or "mineral wax," and it's used in lipsticks, moisturisers, and deodorants. Ozokerite is a solid yellow-to-brown wax that is also called "mineral wax." Historically, ozokerite was found in coal and shale deposits. It is mostly made up of paraffinic hydrocarbons. The raw wax is found and then boiled, treated with sulfuric acid, and filtered with charcoal to make sure it is clean enough. Most "ozokerite" waxes on the market now are made of petroleum wax and microcrystalline wax made from petroleum. It comes in different blends that are either soft or hard, depending on how it is going to be used.

Because ozokerite is a petrochemical product that is highly processed using machines, some people might say it isn't natural. Because ozokerite is made from crude oil, there is a risk that it could be contaminated with polyaromatic hydrocarbons like benzo[a]pyrene, which can cause cancer.

Does Ozokerite Make Your Skin Itchy?

Organic ozokerite wax isn't usually bad for your skin and isn't a common allergy or irritant, so it's usually safe. However, if you're using a deodorant with ozokerite and you're having trouble with your underarms, it could be a factor. People with intertrigo have underarm rashes because they touch each other. The waxy natures of ozokerite could be making that more likely, especially if the formula is sticky, tacky, or rough. As you sweat, perspiration gets stuck in your skin and causes bumps or blisters to form. This is called heat rash. Because wax may be trapping more moisture in your skin than it should, it could be making your skin drier.
